The Rainbow

Digbeth Birmingham
The Rainbow is a long established venue in Birmingham steeped in history with connections to The Peaky Blinders and artists such as UB40 and Ocean Colour Scene.
The team at Newman Gauge were approached to redefine the layout and maximise the potential capacity both inside and out, and, develop a concept for the environment in response to the successful regeneration of Digbeth.

The Rainbow is located in the heart of Digbeth an area of Birmingham which has seen significant development in recent years attracting artists and artisans initially, followed by pop up venues, street food and live music.

The design of The Rainbow ensured we retained the architectural heritage, whilst taking inspiration from the iconic City Of Colour Festival in Digbeth where you can see some of the best graffiti artwork in the UK.

Extracting a clear operational brief was paramount. The aspirations for this space were demanding, therefore co-ordinating the customer journey and back of house areas required careful space planning to maintain circulation routes and achieve a relaxed atmosphere in all zones.

The Rainbow offers a tractional city pub with artistic confidence on the ground floor, the first floor houses a cocktail bar / private venue, and, the basement offers one of Birmingham’s most intimate and popular live music venues.

A new courtyard was created by removing a temporary roof structure over the original service yard, this is a welcome addition to the venue and offers customers a choice of seating areas.
